!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
In the US these are are both highly desirable forbidden fruits and I think they are both great, despite my obvious Land Cruiser Bias. However, which would you choose, were they suddenly available tomorrow on our shores.
A few comparison points - [Price translated to USD making a few guesses]

Closer than I though on price. The Cruiser wins the day with power but the defender much lighter. For some this will be a logical choice, for most it will be emotional. So which would you choose and why?

Land Cruiser because I enjoy reliability.

Defender 110, looks better imo and the lower weight, smaller engine will be more noticeable on the fuel economy

If I could get the Land Cruiser drivetrain with the Defender styling I would be in heaven.

“pole”
LC78 because ultra badass!

Landcruiser, I enjoy going places and not considering how I’ll get back home

Despite my general British bias (electrical demons be damned!), I really like Land Cruisers and this looked tough before I saw the side-by-side comparison. But between V8 and locking diffs, I think I would go with the Land Cruiser.

If I have to have four doors, then I’d take the Toyota Land Crusher.
Otherwise, Defender 90. Because short wheelbase.
![]() 07/13/2015 at 12:49 |

well the 78 doesn’t have 4 doors, so there is that. I guess this should have been a 76 to 110 comparison, but whateves. If you want a short 70 series, you can get one. They used to make (and still do for some markets) a short wheelbase 70

Defender. I’m not sure how you would cut almost 700lb out of the Land Cruiser (maybe with a sawzall?), and I can always install my own lockers.

Defender just because.

As much as I irrationally like the Rover V8, I’d be the first to admit the Puma diesel is an upgrade in general. Enough of an upgrade, that despite the lower hp numbers, the tq/weight is almost the same as both the V8 and the Cruiser, making it only at high speed that the difference really matters. Other than that, I’d go with the one I’d like working on and driving more, so the Defender it is.

Can’t vote because not forbidden fruit, live too near LR dealer.

I need moar doors, lol, and it’s easy peasy to slap in some lockers.

Yeah, but 700 isn’t as much when you load both up to max GVW. I mean 6900 lbs vs 7500...at that point, does it matter?

Money no object, I'd take the 110 because it's being discontinued and it's awesome, then send it to Twisted UK for an LS3 and all that other stuff.

Zombie apocalypse choice is the Land Cruiser but my actual (and debatably flawed) choice is the Defender.

Well, if we wanted doors to doors i would have chosen a 76 series wagon, which is a little less money and as well.
So I guess there is that.

Thats fair, I think thats 50% of the 110’s appeal. There is just something “special” about the looks. Its very emotional that way.

If I get stuck somewhere I like to think it would make some difference :)
![]() 07/13/2015 at 12:59 |

Well, let’s be fair. The six-speed getrag isn’t a bad box, the axles are fine, and the Puma diesel is a Ford. Mechanically speaking, you’ll probably get home, as long as you don’t need lights, dash lights, working seats, proper steering function, brakes, or the thousands of other things that might come over all Lucas.

Yeah, I have great emotions looking at it.

..yeah...I’m still gonna go with the Land Rover.....

I’ve got to go with the Defender. It’s just an iconic rig, like the 60-series Cruiser.

Land Cruiser, because I want one. But I voted Land Rover out of pride.

Exterior dimensions would also play a role.

in which case a 2 door 73 is much smaller.

I see what happened here:
78 troopy
I assumed that the 70 Series Land Cruiser wasn’t in play and instead you were talking about some wacked out Isuzu on crack in a time warp (Since the Trooper didn’t show up until 1981)

Ah, gotcha.
![]() 07/14/2015 at 02:14 |

It’s a close one, but as others have said, reliability wins the day for the LandCruiser.
Full disclosure: I live in Australia where I can buy both of these, which may disqualify me for your poll ;-)

this!
you’ll never regret it!

The Defender is very capable off road because it’s light, and light where it counts the most, but other than that, it’s full of flaws. Some call that character, I on the other hand had a couple of weeks with one, and that’s enough for me - I’ll have a J70, thank you.
![]() 07/14/2015 at 11:40 |

The defender has charm and that’s why its used in clothing catalogs, but i don’t know anyone outside of the dyed in the wool faithful (and bless their hearts for staying faithful) that wouldn’t rather have the Toyota when it came down to actually getting stuff done.

Absolutely. While we are at forbidden fruit, I have a story for you about the HZJ70. As i mentioned before I know a guy who works with all sorts of old Land Cruisers, and thus has gotten a nexus in the Toyota headquarters. He too wanted to have the J70, but it’s not imported in Europe either, the local importer only sells the 200 and the Prada, and won’t get you one, even if you ask nicely. So the guy asked Japan, and they said sure, if you pay for it, we’ll ship you one, but you’ll have to import it yourself - and the car isn’t compliant with European emission regulations. However, and this is the funny bit, there is a relatively easy fix for that, makes the engine Euro 5 compliant, so it can be done, and being a mechanic, they sure figured this out. However most countries don’t accept aftermarket modifications, they only accept cars that were made compliant by the factory. Not the Germans though, the TÜV has the right to pass cars based on measurement, not just factory papers, if it’s good it gets a plate. So he got himself a j70 from japan, disembarked the car in Germany, modified it on site, got through TÜV inspection, and then, with the German Fahrzeugbrief in hand, he could now import the car in whichever European country he saw fit. Nice.
But then customers of him also wanted one. So he did this again and again. And then the freaking Slovakian Border Guard decided, that the best vehicle for their needs would be the j70, but because the importer still didn’t want any of this, they couldn’t get it, until they heard there’s this LC garage in Hungary, that could help them. So he landed an order for 60 j70s (20-20-20 from three different body types), which is more, than the number of LCs the importer sells a year.... And because Japan had no problem selling him this number, he delivered.
I mean, come on. That’s a business case right there, but Toyota of Europe just doesn’t want it.

Thats a really cool story. I wish that trick worked here something fierce.
